Beyond the Schoolyard...RIP!

In 2005, I collaborated with Mad Mike Logik of Reddroom Productions to produce Beyond the Schoolyard. The event was held in a unique 10,000 sq. ft. space in Los Angeles, CA. The one night event played host to a group art show and bboy break competition. The group art show consisted of pieces created by the Do the Math Crew (Neko, That Kid Peep, Joe, and Shandu ), The Dying Art Collective Project, Saratoga Sake, Legendary Bboy Easyroc, and Taz-Roc. Upstairs in the studio, a 4-on-4 bboy competition took center stage with some of Southern California's top bboy crews in attendance, vying for a $1,000 top prize. Below are some pics of the event that were taken by photographer Desiree Lozano, as well as others...enjoy!

Two years later, Beyond the Schoolyard took another swing at the bboy culture by producing another weekend of events. The two day event consisted of an art show in downtown San Diego, as well as a simultaneous show next door at bar Landlord Jim's. Featured artists included Godoyski, SAKE, DAZE, Izzy, Seizer One (LA), and Romali (Homegrown Blends), as well as CHOR BOOGIE and Ferdroc rocking the a live paint session just outstide the gallery. At approximately 7pm, the party started jumping off with a steady flow of art enthusiasts coming to view with nothing but energy. DJ's spun a ton of funk and soul while the guest chomped on some delicious sushi provided by Harney Sushi of San Diego. The local Adidas Original store in the Gaslamp also participated by setting up a display of their latest Originals and provided personalized Beyond the Schoolyard 20% off coupons for a jump off the following day. We are proud to say that the promotion definitely paid off for the sponsor as we attended the following day and witnessed a lot of our guest getting their kicks on.

The second day of the event was a blur to me. All that I can say is that everybody had a blast. The main event was held at the Mira Mesa Epicentre and guest showed at 400. The house was packed and the energy was off the hook. The 1520 Sedgewick DJ's provided the tunes, as bboys from near and as far away as Japan cyphered until the end. Like most NYC Socialites of the Studio 54...they had so much fun that they couldn't remember everything. In fact, we had so much fun that we didn't focus on covering the event with photos and videos. I have placed some video's of two of the prelim battles. Check'em and enjoy. Shout outs to our sponsors...Adidas, Redbull, Kleenhouse Clothing, Edukation Athletics, Community Service, Willy's Workshop, Wild Style Technicians, Landlord Jim's,The Armory, and Harney Sushi.
